# What is a compare

> Learn how to use comparisons to analyze data across time and scenarios.

Comparison tools in Oculon allow you to evaluate your data across different dimensions of time and planning states. Whether you are looking at year-over-year growth or comparing your budget to your actuals, comparisons provide the context needed to make informed decisions.

## Types of comparisons

Oculon offers two main ways to compare your data:

* **[Time Compare](https://oculon.mintlify.site/docs-new/compare/time-compare.md)**: Analyze your data across different periods, such as current month vs. previous month.
* **[Scenario Compare](https://oculon.mintlify.site/docs-new/compare/scenario-compare.md)**: Compare different versions of your data, such as your "Base Case" vs. an "Aggressive Growth" scenario.

## Key features

* **Dynamic Variances**: Automatically calculate absolute and percentage variances between comparison points.
* **Multi-period/Scenario Support**: Compare your current view with one or more other periods or scenarios simultaneously.
* **Consistent Visuals**: Comparisons work seamlessly across models and boards, maintaining a consistent experience.

## Why use comparisons

In FP\&A, data is most valuable when viewed in context. Comparisons allow you to:

* **Identify Trends**: See if performance is improving or declining over time.
* **Manage Risk**: Evaluate the potential impact of different scenarios.
* **Explain Variances**: Quickly pinpoint the cause of differences between expected and actual results.
