A variable does not behave the same way in every context. Its result depends on time, dimensions, formulas, aggregation rules, and whether the value is inherited or overridden.

Across time

Every variable is evaluated across the model’s date range. A variable can contain historical values, forecast values, or a mix of both depending on the last actual date and the formula logic.

Across dimensions

When you attach a dimension to a variable, Oculon evaluates the same variable for each dimension value. A formula set at the aggregate level can still drive all the detail rows if the structure supports it.

In calculations

A variable can be an input, an intermediate step, or an output. If you use the same variable in several formulas, any change to that variable can affect multiple sections of the model.

In reporting

Boards, views, and comparisons reflect the variable’s current effective state. That includes formatting, active scenario, selected dimensions, and time aggregation.
